THE BELMEAD MANSION AT ST FRANCIS/ ST.EMMA

Built in the 1850's by General Philip St. George Cocke, the Belmead Mansion was designed by A.J. Davis a renowned architect who also designed the Powhatan Courthouse.

In the 1890's Belmead was purchased by Edward and Louise Drexel Morrell and became St. Emma Military Academy for African American high school students.

St. Katharine Drexel purchased the adjoining land and built "The Castle", which became St. Francis de Sales High School for girls.

The schools closed in the 1970's after educating thousands of young African American youth.

The Sisters at Belmead are preserving this beautiful land on the River.
